New Delhi: A retired Ministry of External Affairs official was attacked and his 88-year-old wife was stabbed to death, allegedly during a dacoity attempt by his security guards at his house in South Delhi's Safdarjung Enclave on Sunday.
BR Chawla and his wife Kanta Chawla lived alone in the upper ground floor of the building after the death of their two children a few years back. The incident took place around 9 pm on Saturday night when his personal security guard, who was recently hired through a domestic help, reached his house along with two-three of his associates, police said. has been arrested.
According to the police, the guard and his accomplices barged inside Chawla's house, forcibly making the couple sit on a couch. He tied the young man's hands and feet with a rope. When Kanta tried to resist the robbery, one of the accused attacked him with a sharp weapon. A senior police officer said that she fainted and fell on the couch. After this they went to their bedroom and took away all the cash and jewelry kept in the cupboard, he said.
When his wife was lying injured, retired officials of the Ministry of External Affairs managed to go outside the house to alert their neighbors, who informed the President of the Residents' Welfare Association. He said the woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
According to the building's security guard Jitendra Kumar, this is the first time that such an incident has happened in the colony in his 25 years of experience. Recalling the incident, Mr. Kumar said that he had come for his shift at night when he received a call from Chawla's neighbors on the third floor about the theft. Mr. Kumar said he immediately rushed to their home and found the man sitting on a chair while his wife was lying on the floor injured. He had bruises on his neck and his clothes were soaked with blood stains.
Kumar told PTI, "Mr. Chawla was in shock. He told us that the robbers took away all the cash and jewelry. I put his body on a bed with my reliever and called to inform the RWA president about the incident. did.",

RWA president VK Malhotra, who lives in the building next to Chawla, said the couple is registered under the Delhi Police's senior citizen scheme.
